Honduras - Roatan

The idyllic palm-fringed island of Roatan is situated 65 km off the northern coast of Honduras, making it the largest of the three Bay Islands. The island is nothing short of a true tropical paradise, enveloped by the world's second-largest coral reef. While the pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters are undeniably the main draws of Roatan, there are also vibrant urban areas and fascinating wildlife to discover.

Worth seeing
If you're a water sports enthusiast, Roatan is the perfect destination for you. The island offers a plethora of options, whether you prefer activities above or below the water's surface. Guided excursions to the reef are available, but you can also snorkel and dive independently. Additionally, you can embark on adventures such as catamaran sailing, banana boating, jet skiing, and parasailing. At Anthony's Key Resort, you even have the extraordinary opportunity to swim with dolphins, providing a unique and up-close encounter with these playful creatures.

Roatan's largest town, Coxen Hole, is situated near the harbor and boasts the island's widest array of shops and restaurants. For a more laid-back atmosphere, consider visiting the town of West End, which is just a few kilometers from West Bay. Here, you'll find excellent shops and bars, and the ambiance is relaxed and inviting.

For a taste of the island's relaxed vibe, head to French Cay, where numerous sloths have found a new home on Roatan after being rescued from the mainland. Although these creatures move slowly, they can be quite elusive, leading to a fun race to spot one first. In contrast, the small capuchin monkeys that dart among the trees are easier to spot, but beware, as they can be mischievous little pickpockets.

Roatan has a rich history as a genuine pirate haven, and where there are pirates, there is rum. Make your way to West Bay and visit the Roatan Rum Company, where adults can sample locally crafted rum, and kids can indulge in delicious rum cakes. Don't miss the breathtaking panoramic view from the lookout point aptly named Rum Point – it's a must-see during your visit.
