Greece - Naxos
Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades islands, graces the Aegean Sea with its vibrant presence. Its capital, Hora, is home to around 7,000 residents out of the island's approximate population of 20,000. Enriched with Greek mythology, Naxos is said to have nurtured young Zeus in a cave on Mount Zas, and the island brims with tales of gods who are believed to have grown up here. This verdant island is a treasure trove of history, waiting to be explored and embraced.
Worth seeing
Step onto Plaka, the longest sandy beach in both Naxos and the Cyclades. Here, a tranquil and beautiful atmosphere awaits, offering a space to unwind and find solace on the beach. The azure sea beckons with its cool embrace, inviting you to bask in the warmth of the sun and the soothing sound of lapping waves. This slice of paradise is perfect for unwinding.
A symbol of Naxos, Portara, also known as the Temple of Apollo, stands as a proud marble entrance atop the islet Palatia. This remarkable structure dates back to 530 BC, a time when Lygdamis, the ruler of Greece, sought to create the grandest temple on Naxos. However, the project came to a halt when Lygdamis was ousted from power in 506 BC. Today, visitors can marvel at the remnants of the temple, freely exploring its history and the intriguing story behind its creation.
Kalamitsia Monastery, nestled amidst lush greenery, exudes a tranquil allure. Situated approximately 2 kilometers from the town of Melanes, the monastery was established in 1673 by Jesuit monk Sauze on the ruins of an ancient villa. While the monastery has since been abandoned, nature has embraced and intertwined with its structure. Visitors can explore the preserved kitchen, washroom, stables, and prison cells, discovering these echoes of the past as they wander through the monastery's natural embrace.
Naxos is an island that harmoniously weaves mythology, history, and natural beauty into a captivating tapestry. From the inviting shores of Plaka to the iconic Portara and the hidden treasures of Kalamitsia Monastery, Naxos beckons travelers to delve into its rich heritage and immerse themselves in its enchanting landscapes.
