Japan - Kagoshima
Kagoshima, situated as the southernmost city in Kyushu, holds historical significance linked to the Satsuma Uprising. The city is overshadowed by the formidable and active volcano, Sakurajima, which consistently releases ash over the urban area, leading to occasional minor eruptions.
Worth seeing
Sakurajima stands as one of Japan's most active volcanoes and serves as the unmistakable symbol of Kagoshima. Emitting continuous smoke, the volcano experiences minor ash eruptions multiple times each day. Positioned in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, it is an unavoidable presence, marked by towering trees and a landscape boasting a height of 1,117 meters and a circumference of nearly 50 km. Accessible via fast ferries from Kagoshima, covering the 3.5 km journey in a shuttle service throughout the day. Upon reaching Sakurajima, it is recommended to take a sightseeing bus around the volcano, reaching the rear of the crater where an observation post awaits. There is an entrance fee of ¥500 (approximately DKK 29). Additionally, Kagoshima features a Japanese landscape garden along the north coast of downtown Kagoshima. Notably, the garden incorporates the Sakurajima volcano and Kagoshima Bay as a picturesque backdrop, with ponds, waterways winding through bamboo groves, bonsai trees, round, arching bushes, and blooming pale pink cherry trees—the unofficial national plant of Japan.
Climate
Kagoshima experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers from June to September, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 32 degrees. Springs and autumns are warm, while winters, occurring from December to February, are cool.
