Norway - Hammerfest

Hammerfest proudly claims the title of the world's northernmost city, with just over 9,000 inhabitants. This coastal haven is renowned for its untamed natural beauty, captivating history, and warm coastal culture. The sprawling landscapes have shaped the friendly demeanor of its locals, welcoming visitors to experience its allure up close. A significant milestone in the town's history was the installation of electric street lights in 1891, making Hammerfest the pioneer in the Nordic region.

Worth seeing
The Meridian Column stands as a symbol of the Earth's first measurements. Initiated by Russian astronomer Georg Wilhelm Struve, these measurements culminated in Hammerfest in 1852, marking the northernmost point of his meridian. Correspondingly, a similar column resides in Ismail, Turkey, marking the southernmost point. The column's engraving holding the Earth, included on UNESCO's World Heritage List, stands against the backdrop of the vast Norwegian landscape beyond the fjord.

Ascending from Hammerfest's square, a trail leads to the Hall, a prominent ridge of hills on the city's south side. The 20-minute hike offers panoramic views of the city and the Arctic Ocean from the hill's western side. Within the Hall, an observation tower named Varden and a restaurant await your exploration.

Reindeer are a common sight in Hammerfest, often found crossing roads and mingling among people, offering plenty of opportunities for memorable photographs.

Climate
In Hammerfest, the summer brings the magical midnight sun from around May 14 to July 29, while the dark period envelops the town from approximately November 22 to January 19, with prolonged darkness. During the summer months of June to September, temperatures range between 6 to 14 degrees Celsius. The rest of the year witnesses a descent towards freezing temperatures, with the coldest period from December to February, averaging zero to -10 degrees Celsius.
