Turks and Caicos Islands - Grand Turk

In the southernmost part of the Bahamas, 150 km north of Haiti, lies the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory with a population of around 21,000 inhabitants. The archipelago comprises over 30 islands, with only eight being inhabited. The main island is Grand Turk, housing the capital Cockburn Town. Legend has it that Grand Turk was the first place where Columbus set foot in the New World in 1492.

The majority of Grand Turk's population has African roots. Following a period when the islands served as a harbor for pirates, Britain took control in 1787, importing slaves from Africa and initiating cotton production. The African influence is evident in the laid-back culture, featuring dance, drum music, and national attire adorned with colorful stripes.
