Iceland - Akureyri
Akureyri is a charming town located on the shores of Eyjafjörður in northern Iceland. Known as the “Capital of the North,” Akureyri is surrounded by impressive mountains and boasts a rich cultural heritage, a vibrant arts scene, and close proximity to some of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural attractions. A cruise visit to Akureyri offers a unique combination of urban life and nature experiences, including spectacular waterfalls, geothermal areas, and one of the world’s northernmost botanical gardens.
Suggested experiences:
Goðafoss – Waterfall of the Gods – One of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls is located just a 45-minute drive east of Akureyri. The waterfall is approximately 12 metres high and 30 metres wide, forming an elegant horseshoe shape as the waters of the Skjálfandafljót River plunge into a turquoise pool below. Beyond its visual beauty, Goðafoss holds great historical significance. According to the sagas, the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his pagan idols into the waterfall around the year 1000, when Iceland officially adopted Christianity – hence the name “Waterfall of the Gods”.
Mývatn – The Mývatn area is one of Iceland’s most unique and diverse natural regions, shaped by powerful volcanic eruptions around 2,300 years ago. Lava flowed across the landscape, dammed rivers, and created the shallow Lake Mývatn, which today forms the heart of the region. Located approximately 1–1.5 hours’ drive from Akureyri, the area is considered one of the country’s absolute highlights for nature lovers. Visitors can also enjoy bathing in warm, mineral-rich geothermal waters with views over the lake and surrounding mountains.
Dettifoss – About two hours’ drive from Akureyri, within Vatnajökull National Park, lies Dettifoss. This powerful waterfall is approximately 44 metres high and nearly 100 metres wide. Massive volumes of water from the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum plunge into a deep canyon, and the sound, spray, and vibrations can be felt from far away. Unsurprisingly, Dettifoss is regarded as Europe’s most powerful waterfall.
Whale watching in Eyjafjörður – Eyjafjörður is known as one of the best places in Iceland – and Europe – for whale watching. On a whale-watching tour, you have excellent chances of seeing humpback whales, minke whales, and dolphins in their natural habitat. Encountering these magnificent animals in the open sea is both moving and unforgettable.
Akureyri Botanical Garden – The world’s northernmost botanical garden surprises visitors with its lushness and diversity. Thousands of plant species thrive here despite the harsh climate, and the garden is a green oasis in the heart of the town – perfect for a peaceful stroll.
