Turks and Caicos Islands - Grand Turk
Situated on the southernmost part of the Bahamas, approximately 150 km north of Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands stand as a British Overseas Territory with a population of 21,000. Comprising over 30 islands, only eight are inhabited, with Grand Turk serving as the main island and hosting the capital, Cockburn Town. Grand Turk holds historical significance as the site where Columbus is believed to have landed in the New World in 1492.
The majority of Grand Turk's population traces its roots to African origins. After a period when the islands served as a haven for pirates, Britain asserted control in 1787, introducing African slaves for cotton production. The descendants of these slaves form the majority of the population, although recent years have witnessed increased mixing with people of European origin. This cultural amalgamation is evident in the relaxed local culture, characterized by dance, drumming, and traditional white costumes adorned with colorful stripes.
