United Kingdom - Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a picturesque British peninsula located in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Its strategic significance for shipping has led to it lending its name to the strait between Spain and Morocco, connecting the Mediterranean and the Atlantic: the Strait of Gibraltar.
From the Rocks of Gibraltar, you can enjoy views of the Mediterranean, where the waves crash against the beaches in the south, east, and west. To the north lies Spain, which would prefer Gibraltar to be part of the country. However, the last time citizens had the opportunity to vote on their statehood, in 2002, 99% voted to remain part of the UK.
Worth seeing
One of the absolute most popular attractions is the wild Barbary monkeys. They inhabit the Rock of Gibraltar, and there are good opportunities to reach it by minibus or taxi. If you dare, you can also take Gibraltar's cable car, Cable Car Gibraltar, which starts in the botanical garden.
The peninsula has been influenced by various cultures, including the Romans, Moors, Arabs, Spanish, Phoenicians, and finally the British. This is evident in the cultural landscape, where you can find buildings from different rulers.
In the nature reserve Upper Rock, you can also visit the limestone cave St. Michael's Cave, which is 300 meters above sea level and was the first visited by Neanderthals.
