Chile - Antofagasta

Antofagasta, known as "La Perla del Norte" by the locals, aptly describes the city's welcoming and charming character. This northern Chilean city was incorporated into Chile in 1904, having previously been part of Bolivia. This historical connection is why you can embark on a scenic train journey directly from Antofagasta to La Paz, Bolivia, traversing diverse and breathtaking landscapes. With a population of around 320,000 residents, Antofagasta serves as the country's mining hub, thanks to its abundant mineral deposits, including nitrates and silver.

Worth seeing
Just 60 kilometers south of Antofagasta, you'll encounter an almost surreal sculpture rising from the desert sands. Known as 'The Hand of the Desert,' this 11-meter-high sculpture represents a hand and stands as a remarkable and imposing work of art in the midst of the desert. Visitors often describe this experience as unique and otherworldly due to its sheer size and its stark presence in the desert.

If you're interested in delving deeper into the local history, a trip to the Huanchaca Ruins is highly recommended. This expansive site offers a wealth of historical impressions, and there's also a museum where you can explore the city's history in greater detail.

For a captivating natural experience by the water, visit 'La Portada,' a rock formation that resembles a gateway and stands in the sea. Beyond this remarkable rock, the surrounding landscape is dramatic and stunning.
